Previsualisation (previz) was put to full effect in this bridge bending Chrysler commercial. We see 101 tug boats at the beginning of the ad surrounding the Golden Gate Bridge, San Fransisco, all pulling in opposite directions. Slowly, before our eyes.the bridge begins to bend into extreme proportions. Its left as a series of ‘S’ shapes, perfect for test driving the new Sebrings maneouvering capabilities. The commercial ends with the three Sebring varieties taking on their new twisty road.
The cars and the bay would be the only shot part of the commercial. Therefore to get an idea of how the bent bridge would look in different angles, a mock up bent bridge was created in 3D. With camera moves and rough bridge animations, we created the previz.
Once shot, the commercial went though 8 weeks of tweaks to build the CGI bridge using Maya and Softimage.
